ARTSCI SALON

Started in 2012, the ArtSci Salon is a collective of artists and scientists organizing public discussions, art installations, performances and workshops at the intersection of art and science. The goal is to facilitate the cross-pollination between science, technology and the arts. ArtSci Salon responds to the recent expansion in the GTA of a community of scientists and interdisciplinary/media artists, increasingly seeking to establish research collaborations across different fields of knowledge. ArtSci Salon is unique in addressing the role of the arts in the context of scientific research. In fact, the ArtSci Salon does not specialize in science communication writ large: to address complex and multifaceted phenomena affecting our world today, we need to transcend established disciplinary boundaries and share ideas, research questions and methodologies. This is reflected in our unique approach: we don’t use the arts to only explicate or to promote science, but we ask how art and science collaboration may benefit each other and may foster innovation and problem solving. Since 2017, the ArtSci Salon has engaged in experimental/guerrilla curation by re-appropriating and reviving underutilized spaces (such as cabinets and showcases),and by engaging in site-specific performances and interventions atthe University of Toronto. During the pandemic, we have produced multipart performances in empty buildings and we have built a post-pandemic mobile gallery to transcend the space of the traditional gallery, and to encourage socialization, dialogues and cross-disciplinary explorations. the ArtSci Salon has received funding from The Fields Institute, SSHRC, OAC, the University of Toronto, and York University.
