From*A*Pit was formed in 1994 by Richard Mongiat, David Sylvestre and Krys Verrall. They produced two shows, “True to Form” at The Dufferin Mall in 1995 and “POPeye, Nine Painters and a Magazine” at College Park Mall in 1997. This collective explored the role of figuration in contemporary painting coupled with a mandate to make visual art accessible to the broader public. Both shows featured artists with varying approaches to representation. In “POPeye”, in addition to the paintings on display the show also included a magazine with original contributions from each of the artists exploring the role of pop culture as an influencing factor in the creative process.
