IMPURE
The Impure Collective was formed in 1994 by a group of graduates of the Ontario College of Art and Design. The former students had spent a year together participating in the OCAD Florence Italy studio program under the tutelage of Canadian Painter Rae Johnson. During that year, with the help of Johnson, the students were able to organize an art show at the Canadian Cultural Centre in Rome. Upon returning from Italy the group decided to continue organizing their own shows in Toronto. The group offered a support network for members, allowing them to find means of exhibiting work in the Toronto area. The Impure Collective was organized on a non-hierarchical, consensual basis. Although painting was the primary focus of Impure’s early exhibitions, they later diversified to include sculpture, film, video and installation. Impure mounted one show per year between 1994 and 1998, each artists contributing money to rent temporary exhibition spaces in Toronto.
