SPACEMAKER II
SPACEMAKER II is a hybrid form of a gallery, independent artist research development space, and community gathering hub. At our core, we are conduits for making space. Founded in 2020 by artists Caroline Popiel and Samantha Jones, SPACEMAKERII is located in a detached garage near Bathurst and Dundas in downtown Toronto. Since its founding, the space has featured over 15 local artists and collectives. Inspired from their time at the VSVSVS warehouse, SPACEMAKERII thrives on the DIY spirit and is completely self funded.

SPACEMAKER II is situated within the diverse community of Tkaronto. In representing our community, we open the door of our facility to all peoples and representations. We acknowledge the land we are meeting on is the traditional territory of many nations including the Mississaugas of the Credit, Anishnabeg, Chippewa, the Haudenosaunee, and the Wendat people and is now home to many diverse First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. We acknowledge that Toronto is covered by Treaty 13 signed with the Mississaugas of the Credit. As a community and cultural space, we acknowledge the troubled colonial past of the lands on which we gather. We aim to dismantle systems of colonialism, racism and discrimination in Tkaronto. We acknowledge the historic and present impacts these systems have on communities in Tkaronto. Our goal is to provide a platform for BIPOC, LGBTQQIP2AA, and minority artists, creatives and performers. We wish to prioritize work from these communities, and create space for these voices to be heard, expressed and released. We acknowledge our own backgrounds as settlers. We will continue to look for ways to best serve our community, and we will be constantly growing, learning and listening.
